The familiar fundamentals remain, including blocking, tackling, passing, running and team strategy. With fewer players covering the field, athletes often have more space, greater individual responsibility and opportunities to contribute in multiple positions. What Is Eight-Man Football?

Eight-man football is one of several recognized forms of high school football designed to give smaller schools a way to field competitive teams. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains rules information for multiple versions of the sport, including eight-player football. In its 2023–24 national participation report, the NFHS recorded 26,420 eight-player football participants, an increase from 23,812 the previous year.

The biggest difference is visible in the name: eight athletes line up for each team rather than 11. Exact field and competition provisions can vary by association, but the smaller lineup generally creates a more open game and asks players to cover more ground.

Why Lakeside Christian School Plays Eight-Man Football

Lakeside launched its football program in 2007, initially competing in six-man football. As the program grew, the Lions moved to eight-man competition and discovered a format that fits the school and its student-athletes well.

Although Lakeside now serves approximately 530 K–12 students, fielding a sustainable 11-man team would still be difficult given the size of the high school and varsity roster. Eight-man football allows Lakeside to offer a competitive program while creating more opportunities for students to participate meaningfully.

Lakeside’s varsity football team is open to students in grades 9–12. The school also offers a separate middle school team for students in grades 6–8, giving younger Lions time to learn fundamentals and prepare for varsity competition.

Bigger Opportunities for Lakeside Student-Athletes

At a large school, a student may spend much of the season waiting behind a long depth chart. Lakeside gives more athletes a realistic opportunity to earn playing time, gain experience and discover how they can help their team.

One current starter transferred from a larger public high school and has found both meaningful playing time and the family atmosphere he wanted. His experience illustrates a central strength of the program: students who might receive limited opportunities elsewhere can find room at Lakeside to work, develop, contribute and belong.

Playing Both Sides Builds a Broader Skill Set

Many Lakeside players contribute on offense and defense. A student who carries or catches the ball may also tackle, defend open space or read an opposing offense. That develops conditioning, adaptability and a broader understanding of football.

A Smaller Roster Creates Close Team Relationships

Eight-man football depends on trust. Because teammates rely on one another across multiple positions, students quickly learn that individual choices affect the whole group. Victories are celebrated together, setbacks are faced together and growth happens through daily work alongside coaches and teammates.

Iron Sharpens Iron: Faith and Character in the Football Program

Now in his second year as head coach, Coach Dennis Vela is challenging the Lions to live out the principle of Proverbs 27:17: iron sharpens iron. Players are expected to help one another grow through leadership, good sportsmanship, honest accountability and Christ-honoring character.

Prayer, biblical encouragement ,and coach-led devotions are part of the program. The goal is not only to develop skilled players, but also to help young men become faithful, responsible adults who follow the Lord and honor Him with their lives.

That purpose is reflected in Lakeside Athletics’ call to Roar as One. Compete with courage. The Lions are challenged to compete wholeheartedly while remembering whom they represent: their Lord, their families, their teammates and their school.

Building the Team at YWAM Orlando

For the first time in summer 2026, the full varsity football team traveled together for a multi-night Christian camp at YWAM Orlando in Central Florida.

Football was only part of the experience. YWAM staff led worship, Bible teaching, group activities and discussions designed to deepen faith and develop leadership. Away from their normal routines, players strengthened relationships with teammates and coaches while considering what it means to follow Christ in everyday life. Before they could compete as one, they took intentional time to grow as one.

Opportunities Beyond Game Night

Lakeside football also gives student-athletes opportunities to represent their school beyond the field.

In July 2026, four Lakeside starters and Coach Vela participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers High School Football Media Day at One Buccaneer Place. The Bucs welcomed more than 30 local high school teams for interviews, professional photos and a tour of the team’s facility.

Later in August, Lakeside players and Coach Vela appeared on the Tampa St. Pete Sports Connection podcast to discuss the team and its season. Catch their interview at around the 1hr 30min mark on the radio show's YouTube channel. These experiences ask students to communicate confidently and represent their school thoughtfully. They reinforce that being a student-athlete includes how a player speaks and carries himself, not only what happens during a game.

A New Home for Friday Night Football in Largo

The 2026 season brought an unexpected change. When Lakeside’s previous home field could no longer accommodate evening sports because of its field-lighting needs, the school had to find a new location quickly.

The Lions found a welcoming new home at Largo Sports Complex, 1640 McMullen Road in Largo. The facility offers improved parking and a quality field, helping Lakeside create an enjoyable Friday-night experience for players, students and families. All 2026 Lakeside home football games will be played at Largo Sports Complex.

The team opened its new home field with a decisive 48–6 victory. Players have also begun helping create theme nights, inviting the Lion community to dress up, show school spirit and make home games about more than the final score.
