The Benefits of School Clubs: New Ways for Lakeside Students to Learn, Create and Connect
Some of a student’s most meaningful growth happens when they have the freedom to try something new. School clubs create that space. They invite students to explore an interest, practice a skill, work through challenges and build friendships with classmates who enjoy the same things.
That is why Lakeside Christian School is excited to expand student opportunities with four Quarter 1 clubs: Debate Club, Ukulele Club, Watercolor Painting Club and Chess Club. Sign-ups are now open, and meetings begin the week of August 31, 2026.
These after-school clubs offer more than an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. They complement Lakeside’s K–12 academic programs by encouraging curiosity, communication, creativity, persistence and community within a Christ-centered school environment.
Why School Clubs Matter for K–12 Students
The benefits of school clubs for students can reach well beyond the activity itself. Clubs give children and teens a low-pressure setting in which to learn by doing. A student may discover a love for music, become more comfortable sharing an idea, develop patience while working on a painting, or learn to think several moves ahead across a chessboard.
Clubs can also help students feel more connected to their school. A Regional Educational Laboratory Midwest resource hosted by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences notes that students with a strong sense of belonging are more likely to engage in school and perform well academically. Shared-interest activities give students another natural way to feel known, included and supported by peers and teachers.
Students Can Explore Interests and God-Given Talents
Children do not always know what they enjoy until they have an opportunity to try it. A quarterly club format gives Lakeside students the chance to explore different interests during the school year without making a yearlong commitment to one activity.
Whether a student is drawn to public speaking, music, visual art or strategy, each club offers a practical entry point. Students can build on an existing interest or step into something completely new.
Clubs Build Confidence Through Practice
Confidence often grows through small, repeated moments of progress. Speaking during a debate, learning a new chord, completing a watercolor piece or recognizing a chess pattern can show a student that improvement comes with practice.
In clubs, students can take appropriate risks, learn from mistakes and try again. Those habits: preparation, perseverance and a willingness to grow, can support students in the classroom and in everyday life.
Students Practice Communication and Problem-Solving
Every club develops a different set of skills:
-
Debate encourages students to organize ideas, listen carefully and communicate clearly.
-
Ukulele helps students develop focus, rhythm, coordination and consistent practice habits.
-
Watercolor painting invites creativity, observation, patience and thoughtful decision-making.
-
Chess challenges students to plan ahead, solve problems and respond calmly when a strategy changes.
These are valuable skills for elementary, middle and high school students. Because several clubs span multiple grade levels, students across Lakeside’s K–12 community can find an option suited to their age and interests.
Shared Interests Can Help Friendships Grow
Joining a club gives students an immediate point of connection: everyone in the room has chosen to be there for the same activity. That shared interest can make it easier to start conversations, encourage one another and celebrate progress together.
For students who are still finding their place, or who simply want to widen their circle, a club can create another meaningful sense of belonging in the school community.

Debate Club: Learn to Think and Speak Clearly
Grades: 4–12
Day and time: Mondays, 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Quarter 1 cost: $40
Debate Club gives students an opportunity to examine ideas, build a thoughtful position and communicate it with clarity. Students can practice listening, reasoning and respectful discussion, skills that are useful in class presentations, leadership and future academic settings.
Ukulele Club: Build Musical Skills One Chord at a Time
Grades: 2–12

First-time enrollment: $95, including supplies

First-time Ukulele Club students receive a concert-size ukulele and note chart to keep. Watercolor Painting Club: Create, Experiment and Grow
Grades: All ages
Day and time: Thursdays, 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Quarter 1 cost: $90, including supplies
Watercolor Painting Club gives students space to experiment with color, technique and creative expression. Each student receives paintbrushes, a canvas brush holder, watercolor paints and a watercolor paper book. These supplies are included in the club fee and will be used throughout the quarter.
Watercolor Club offers a hands-on extension of the creative opportunities found in Lakeside’s Arts Program, giving students the satisfaction of learning a specific painting medium and technique.
Chess Club: Practice Strategy and Prepare to Compete
Grades: 2–12
Day and time: Fridays, 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Quarter 1 cost: $50
Chess Club returns with an expanded goal for the 2026–27 school year: coordinating with other schools for chess meets and tournaments. These events would give Lakeside students opportunities to apply their skills in friendly competition and represent their school beyond weekly club meetings.
Chess Club students will also receive a Lakeside Chess Club shirt. Students may wear it on club days and during chess meets, tournaments and other Chess Club events.
How to Help Your Child Choose a School Club
The “best” club is not necessarily the one your child already knows how to do. It is the one that sparks enough interest for them to show up, participate and keep learning.
Parents can help by asking a few simple questions:
-
Which activity sounds most interesting to you right now?
-
Would you like to create, perform, discuss ideas or solve strategic problems?
-
Do you want to strengthen a familiar skill or try something entirely new?
-
Can our family commit to the weekly meeting day and time this quarter?
-
What would you be proud to learn or complete by the end of the quarter?
Allowing students to take part in the decision can help them feel ownership of the experience.
